Tronja Anglero is an African American fine artist who tells stories from the past, present and future through vibrant, figurative paintings of underrepresented women. Based in Virginia, Anglero has worked in the garment industry for several years as a Fashion Illustrator. Her painting style is strongly influenced by this experience and she continues to apply vibrant colors, experimental textures, and dramatic movements with various mixed media materials and techniques. She is passionate about painting in the perspective of celebration, tradition and perseverance in relation to women of color across the globe.
Anglero is actively involved in the arts community and builds opportunities for other women and minorities to have access to education and artistic pursuits through fundraising and mentorships. She helps women recognize, harness, and utilize their talents and resources to support their journey. In 2020 she was elected to the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Art (FCCA) Board and serves as Vice President. Since 2019 she has also been the Community Outreach Chair for Women Caucus For Art DC Chapter (WCADC).
Anglero holds a BFA in Fine Arts and Illustration from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. In 2019 Anglero was commissioned to do a mural portrait of Vice President Kamala Harris for inauguration located in Washington DC. Her work has been exhibited in MD, DC, VA, NC, OH, PA, CA and in private and public collections nationwide.
Artist Statement
In my art practice, I paint vivid imagery of underrepresented women motivated by generational events, stories, and community. In reflection of my personal and collective experiences as a woman of color, I utilize various techniques and materials. My explorative approach expresses the dynamic nature and emotional landscape of the female form. In the process of creation, I start with a story, social or political incident that sparks a visual vision in the perspectives of the women that are affected. Whether these stories are filled with pain or joy, I capture the essence of the feminine spirit radiating from within. Victoriously basking in vibrant compositions, I incorporate organic forms, nature, and symbolism to reflect expressions of this internal beauty.
Growing up as an African American woman, my art and lifestyle are highly influenced by my mother and how she raised me. Even though she was successful in her creative endeavors and business, she struggled to be acknowledged for her achievements. The lack of women and minorities in both the media and privileged communities was disheartening. The hardships she went through as a woman of color, inspired and enabled me to persevere in the face of injustice and generational trauma. My art practice reflects the underrepresentation of women by providing a space for us to take up unapologetically, whether it moves through the structure of community and activism or the seams of the canvas I paint on.
